In sustainability, what gets measured gets managed

 

In my position at Arizona Public Service Co., I hear questions all the time on how to define sustainability.

 

After numerous discussions, I've come to the conclusion that the best explanation comes from a story in the Old Testament: In Leviticus, God instructs the Israelites to let their fields lie fallow every seven years, and to leave the corners of their fields for the needy to glean.

 

OK, we're not all farmers. Perhaps for some individuals, the Old Testament doesn't exactly translate into our daily modern lives. But it's not hard to see how sustainability works in this story, and it is stories that can help bring sustainability to life. More ...
